Shiny white teeth improve your smile and give a greater impression of cleanliness and youth.

With the new teeth whitening technology that we offer at our practice we can help you to improve the colouring of your teeth.

  • Extrinsic stains  produced by certain colouring agents (tannins) that are deposited on the surfaces of teeth, or through the presence of deposits of bacteria, dental calculus or tobacco.   The colouring agents are present in certain drinks (coffee, red wine, colas, tea, herbal teas such as thyme and pennyroyal, etc.), in certain foodstuffs (chard, artichokes, spinach, red berries, etc.) or in certain medicinal products (syrups, iron, etc.). Furthermore, antiseptic mouthwashes such as chlorhexidine, Listerine® and Oraldine® often increase the level of discolouration by encouraging the release of colouring agents.
  • Intrinsic stains that are due to the dark colouring of the patient's dentine or changes in dental enamel caused by injuries, fluorosis or medicines such as tetracycline.

Extrinsic stains can be easily removed using teeth polishing devices, and these may provide an effective solution when combined with sessions of preventive treatment or with teeth whitening sessions at home.

Intrinsic stains are more difficult to remove, and in this case it is necessary to use whitening products that are kept in contact with the teeth for longer periods.  The whitening that is achieved will depend on the type of colouration concerned. The most difficult types to improve are those caused by the deterioration of  tooth enamel, by white stains and by bands of different colouring caused by tetracycline.

At the clinic we usually carry out a single whitening session during which we use photoactivatable whitening agents.  In order to maintain the results obtained in the clinical session, patients subsequently take home whitening agents contained in made-to-measure mouth trays, which the teeth absorb little by little.   The trays can be worn for 3 to 4 hours during the day or 7 to 8 hours at night, depending on the concentration of the product. We assess which is the most appropriate option for each patient.

These techniques are non-corrosive and odour-free, although they may cause varying degrees of sensitivity lasting from a few hours to one or two days.

They are, however, not to be used by pregnant women or children under 12 years of age.
After a teeth whitening session, patients should avoid the intake of colouring agents in their diet and also antiseptic mouthwashes, tobacco and food containing acids, so as not to increase teeth sensitivity.

Theeth colouration may reappear after a few months.  For this reason it is especially useful to undergo follow-up treatment at home once every 6 to 12 months.
