Dental Implants

Dental implants have made it possible in recent years appreciably improve the quality of life of a large number of people all over the world. Nowadays people who have lost their teeth can replace conventional, removable false teeth with fixed false teeth, and thus enjoy a level of dental health comparable with that of their youth.

The computer-guided and minimally invasive surgery that we carry out at our clinic, the result of the use of recent 3D X-ray imaging techniques, makes it possible to insert implants almost without opening the gum surface, thus reducing pain and postoperative discomfort.

Immediate loading makes it possible, in certain circumstances, to insert the implant in the bone and place the tooth inside it on the same day.

The first step in the treatment consists of inserting a titanium screw (the implant) into the jawbone.  The screw gradually attaches itself to the bone in the same way as natural tooth roots. After a certain length of time, this metal root provides a firmly attached stable support, and an artificial tooth is then attached to its upper, visible part on top of the gum. This tooth is manufactured so as to match the other teeth in shape, colour and function.

During the period awaiting the successful integration of the implant into the bone, the patient is required to use a provisional false tooth.   At the end of the period of integration during which the implants have grown into the bone, some upright supports are inserted into the implants onto which the false teeth are screwed in a fixed and permanent way.

Some of the most notable advantages offered by this method are the increased quality of life, the sensation of having one's own teeth, the recovery of the ability to chew and, most importantly, greater social confidence.

The new techniques of 3D X-ray imaging enable us to carry out a planned diagnosis of each case and to undertake computer-guided surgery involving the use of a specialized software program (Simplant®) and the manufacturing of surgical templates. By means of these templates the computer simulation can be transferred with total precision to the patient's mouth.

Thus the use of this technology makes it possible to place implants almost without opening the gum surface, since the anatomy of the bone is already known in precise detail.

The most immediate consequence of its use is that the surgery is completed in a much faster and less aggressive way, with a clear reduction in pain and postoperative discomfort, making it possible even to avoid the need for stitches.

Moreover, these tools enable us to design false teeth that are much better from an the aesthetic point of view, and also, very often, to undertake immediate loading or insertion of the teeth

After a personal consultation, the type of implant and the most appropriate treatment option are chosen. The most common of these are the following:

  • Replacing a single tooth. In this case an implant is put in place and, subsequently, a crown (false tooth) is inserted into it. The dental implant replaces both the natural tooth that has been lost and its root, while the crown is identical to the neighbouring teeth.
  • Replacing more than one tooth. In this case we put in place a number of implants equal to (or less than) the number of natural teeth lost, depending on the location, space and loading capacity available, and, subsequently, we insert the required number of crowns are inserted onto the implants.
  • Replacing all. In this situation the two most frequent options are to place between two and four implants with a set of dentures resting on them, or to place a larger number of implants to hold a fixed set of dentures in place.
  • Bone atrophy. When teeth are lost, atrophy is produced in the alveolar bone, which is where the implants are inserted. This means that it is sometimes necessary to regenerate the bone before or during the surgical operation to insert the implant surgery.

Once the treatment is completed, a series of regular appointments are scheduled with the aim of monitoring and keeping healthy the patient's implants, teeth and gums.
